Projekt Ilaiyaraaja Season III — 271/365 — Chinna Paya Manasu

Kida Poosari Magudi received good reviews from the few reviewers who watched the movie but the movie didn’t do well at the box-office. Like many low budget movies, the only draw to the movie was Ilaiyaraaja’s music.

Chinna Paya Manasu is a beautiful duet by Suraj and Surmukhi that starts with strings, guitar and oboe in the background. The song is backed by a synth rhythm that never changes but Ilaiyaraaja weaves his magic with the tune especially the charanams. When I heard the song for the first time, it immediately reminded me of Pon Mane Kobam Yeno but I think it could because of the Raaga it’s based on (charanam) but the starting of the song sounds like Kaapi.

Listen to the song on a good headphones, you can identify those strings in the background in the charanam. Another gem that you might want to add to your list.
